Valkyria Chronicles 4 is set in the fictional WW2 based continent of Europa and follows the exploits of Squad E on behalf of the Atlantic Federation in a war against the evil Eastern Imperial Alliance. As the story unfolds, Squad E, which is controlled by the player, carries out missions which in turn furthers character story arcs and the overall narrative.

Violence consists mainly of human soldiers and militia being shot by firearms during combat scenes, very little blood is shown but sometimes wounds are visible.
