A visual novel detective game set in Japan during the 1990s, in which the player must investigate the urban legend of the Smiling Man: a serial killer whose victims are left with paper bags on their heads with a smiling face drawn on them. The player must examine crime scenes for clues and interview witnesses, delving deeper into their testimonies to uncover the truth.

Rating issues

This game contains violence towards vulnerable and defenceless characters. There are scenes in which an adult serial killer is seen strangling multiple persons including a child.

Other issues

This game also contains the use of bad language including ‘bastard’, ‘bitch’, ‘piss’, ‘shit’, ‘crap’, ‘damn’ and ‘hell’.

The game features references to death, murder, and suicide with accompanying still and animated scenes of the bodies of the victims, some shown with visible blood and wound details.

There is a scene involving implied self-mutilation. Copious blood effects but no wound details are shown during this scene.

References to alcoholism and domestic violence relating to children are also shown. The children in question are depicted with bruising on their faces but the actual abuse is implied. The action happens off camera, although sound effects are heard.
