These games feature frequent depictions of gross violence towards human-like characters. Characters in these games are frequently killed in disturbing and gory ways. Decapitations, torture and dismemberment are seen in multiple scenes throughout, all paired with strong blood and gore. The games also feature frequent depictions of violence towards defenceless human-like characters. In multiple scenes humans are shown tied up to objects such as beds and chairs and then mutilated in various ways. Multiple scenes involve ‘doctors’ performing botched procedures on alive patients where they cut them open or stab them repeatedly. Two of the games, ‘Outlast: Whistleblower’ and ‘Outlast 2’ feature scenes of sexual violence. In ‘Whistleblower’ a man is shown performing ‘sex change’ operations on inmates. The victims are tied up to a make-shift hospital bed and then either stabbed repeatedly in the genitals or run through by a circular saw. In Outlast 2 the player character is drugged and then raped by a female character. The scene is shown from the first-person perspective with the woman naked on top of the man while he yells out in protest. The games also contain frequent use of sexual expletives, variations of the word “fuck” are found throughout.
