The game was rated PEGI 12 for moving images that encourage the use of games of chance that are played as a traditional means of gambling. Not appropriate for persons below 12 years of age.
The player controls the main character from an overhead perspective and navigates him throughout the fictional region of Kanto in a quest to master Pokémon battling. The goal of the games is to become the champion of the Pokémon League by defeating the eight Gym Leaders, then the top four Pokémon trainers in the land, the Elite Four

Rating issues

Pokémon Red Version contains gameplay in which the player’s character places bets in a ‘slot’ machine. With each loss, the player is asked whether to “play again”. If yes is selected, a further number of bets can be placed followed by a number of losses until the player wins. The number of losses greatly outweighs the number of wins.
