Shenmue I&II consist of open-world environments interspersed with brawler battles and quick time events. They include elements of role-playing, life & social simulation games, such as a day-and-night system, variable weather effects, non-player characters with daily schedules, and interactive elements such as vending machines, arcades, etc.

Rating issues

Violence in the game is exclusively towards human characters and of a realistic nature. The majority of combat is hand-to-hand, yet some characters carry small blades. There is also some gambling in the game as it teaches the player to play various dice and card games, as well as to use slot machines.
